Fall is my favorite time of year to decorate the house. I think the biggest reason is because it's the one time of year that the decor can be up for a very long time. You get the biggest bang for your decor buck. I usually keep my fall decor up thru Thanksgiving weekend because I use a base decor that can used for both Halloween and Thanksgiving. Then if I want, I can add a few Halloween or Thanksgiving themed pieces into the mix. The ideal base fall decor for me are faux pumpkins. They can be used for both Halloween and Thanksgiving because they make sense for both.
A few days ago I shared on my Instagram the faux pumpkins that I had recently spray painted white and although I love the color white, the crisp, bold color was not working on our rustic TV console table. So instead of finding something to replace them with, I made them over with a bit of wax, a paint brush, and a rag.
I used Deep Brown Americana Decor Creme Wax from Hobby Lobby because I was out of my CeCe Caldwell's Aging Wax and also because it was cheap. I used a 40% off coupon from their app and paid under $5 for a container that will last me through many, many projects. A little bit of wax goes a long way.
To start, I applied the wax to the pumpkin pretty heavily avoiding the stem because I needed something to hold on to.
After just a few minutes I then took an old rag and wiped the wax from most of the pumpkin. At this point you can wipe as much or little off depending on the look you are going for. I did all of my pumpkins a little different each time. For some I wiped away almost all of the wax, and for others I left a lot of wax in the grooves.
When the wax was dry, I went back and painted the wax onto the stems. I decided not to wipe any of the wax away from the stems because I thought they looked more natural this way.
I'm really happy with the way they turned out. The color of the wax compliments the color of the rough sawn boards on the TV console table. I added the black mason jars from Michael's to break up the neutral color of the pumpkins. Plus, it looks really good with the black pipe base of the stand.
This easy DIY project turned out pretty well for the little bit of money spent on the wax and spray paint. If I would have had wax left over from previous projects, it would have been dirt cheap to transform these pumpkins. Rustic decor can be a bit pricey so it was worth spending the time to give these pumpkins just the right look for the space.
